IRVING, Texas -- The ExxonMobil Foundation Inc. has awarded $2 million in grants to 4,000 schools in 45 states through ExxonMobil's Educational Alliance program. Each $500 grant was awarded to a school nominated by a local Exxon- or Mobil-branded service station.

"Now more than ever, businesses and neighbors are looking to one another for support," said Jim Carter, U. S. regional director of ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing Co. "I'm pleased that so many of our service stations owners and operators recognized the value of the Educational Alliance program as a way to make a difference in their communities."

The use of the $500 Educational Alliance grant is left to the discretion of the school officials. A grant may be used to purchase equipment from a school's "wish list," set up a program or fund a special project.

In 2001, schools requested Educational Alliance grants for a wide variety of equipment and programs. Equipment for computers, science and marine laboratories, sports, music classes and environmental studies were funded with grants. Grant money was also used for programs including art, landscaping, theater performances and language programs.
